Internet for gaming

Online play, cloud gaming and broadcasting each need a different number.

Online play itself is small: Spectrum's own gaming guide puts it at 3 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up on average (Spectrum, Wayback Machine copy, captured Jun 2026). Cloud gaming is a video stream coming in: GeForce NOW asks for 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS; NVIDIA, read Sep 2026. Streaming yourself is video going out: Twitch broadcasting recommends 6,000 kbps (6 Mbps) of upload for 1080p at 60 FPS; Twitch, read Sep 2026.

Each platform publishes what a connection needs for its own service. This page repeats those figures word for word, names the basis each page states, keeps download and upload apart, and shows which Spectrum Internet plan clears the download side.

Three jobs, three numbers

Playing online. A console or PC running the game itself sends and receives small packets. Spectrum’s own guide puts it at 3 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up on average (Spectrum, Wayback Machine copy, captured Jun 2026). What players feel is latency, the round trip to the game’s server, and no plan speed is a latency figure.

Cloud gaming. The game runs in a data center and arrives as video, so it needs what a video stream needs, coming in: GeForce NOW asks for 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS; NVIDIA, read Sep 2026. The cloud gaming page has every service’s figure by resolution.

Broadcasting. Streaming yourself sends video out, so it is upload. Twitch’s recommended settings name the video bitrate for each resolution and frame rate; they are in the table below in Twitch’s own unit.

What each platform publishes

One line per published figure, download and upload in separate columns. The basis is the page’s own word: a minimum where it says minimum, at least or required; a recommendation where it only recommends; unstated where the figure stands under a heading with no such word. PlayStation’s pages disagree with each other, so both are here and no figure is compared across bases. Twitch’s figures are the video bitrate a broadcaster sends, shown in Twitch’s kbps and in Mbps.

The download side, and the plan that clears it

Every download figure on this page fits within Internet 100, up to 100 Mbps: the largest is GeForce NOW's 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 FPS. Internet 100 is $30/mo for 1 year, or $20/mo for 2 years with a Spectrum TV plan. Plans are compared on download only; speeds are up to and vary.

INTERNET OFFER: Limited-time offer; subject to change; new residential customers only (no Spectrum service in past 30 days). Standard rates apply after promo period or service change. Actual speeds (including wireless) vary and are not guaranteed. Activation fee additional; taxes may apply. Gig speeds require a compatible modem; see Spectrum.net/modem for list. Terms and conditions apply, subject to change. Not available in all areas. Restrictions apply. Spectrum Internet® is powered by fiber and connected to the premises by coaxial lines.

Spectrum's plan names give download speeds; check your plan's Broadband Facts label for upload.

Streaming yourself is upload

Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines give a video bitrate for each resolution and frame rate: 6,000 kbps for 1080p at 60 FPS, 4,500 kbps for 1080p at 30 FPS, 4,500 kbps for 720p at 60 FPS, 3,000 kbps for 720p at 30 FPS (Twitch, read Sep 2026). Those are the figures you send, in Twitch’s own unit; 6 Mbps is 6,000 kbps. Twitch’s page has no headroom rule, so none is added here. Spectrum’s own guide puts livestreaming at 3 to 9 Mbps of upload depending on quality, frame rate and platform. Spectrum's plan names give download speeds; check your plan's Broadband Facts label for upload.

Latency is a round trip, not a speed

Lag is the time a packet takes to reach the game’s server and come back. The one platform on this page that publishes a ceiling is NVIDIA: GeForce NOW sets a minimum of less than 80 ms for latency to an NVIDIA data center; NVIDIA, read Sep 2026. Our speed test measures the round trip to our server before and during a download, so a rise under load is a number you can compare across times of day. It is latency to our server, not to any game’s data center.

Common questions

How much internet speed do I need for online gaming?

Less than for streaming video. Spectrum's own gaming guide puts online play at 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload on average (Spectrum, Wayback Machine copy, captured Jun 2026; spectrum.com blocks automated reads, so the figure is quoted from the archive). Cloud gaming and streaming yourself need more, and the table above carries each platform's own figure with the basis its page states.

Is download or upload the number that matters?

Both, for different jobs. Playing online and cloud gaming are mostly download. Broadcasting is upload: Twitch broadcasting recommends 6,000 kbps (6 Mbps) of upload for 1080p at 60 FPS; Twitch, read Sep 2026, and Spectrum's guide puts livestreaming at up to 9 Mbps of upload depending on quality and platform. Spectrum's plan names give download speeds; check your plan's Broadband Facts label for upload.

Which Spectrum Internet plan covers gaming?

Every download figure on this page fits within Internet 100, up to 100 Mbps: the largest is GeForce NOW's 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 FPS. Internet 100 is $30/mo for 1 year, or $20/mo for 2 years with a Spectrum TV plan. Plans are compared on download only; speeds are up to and vary.

Does a faster plan fix lag?

Not on its own. Lag is latency, the round trip between you and the game's server, and no plan speed is a latency figure. The one platform here that publishes a latency ceiling is GeForce NOW: GeForce NOW sets a minimum of less than 80 ms for latency to an NVIDIA data center; NVIDIA, read Sep 2026. Our speed test measures the round trip to our server, idle and while downloading, so a rise under load shows up as a number rather than a feeling.

Are games or Twitch part of a Spectrum Internet plan?

No. Nothing on this page comes with a Spectrum plan. GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium, Amazon Luna and Twitch are each their own subscription or account, run over the connection you bring.
