How to watch the 2026-27 NHL season without cable

The 2026-27 NHL season opened September 29, 2026, and the national schedule is split cleanly between two homes. The NHL's national TV announcement of August 26, 2026 says 172 national games are broadcast by TNT Sports and ESPN this season. Knowing which games sit where is most of the battle when you are trying to watch NHL games in 2026 without a traditional pay TV box.

This guide is built to be read all season, not for one week. It covers where the national games stream, what the ESPN App's NHL Power Play actually gives you, the marquee dates worth circling, and where ESPN Unlimited happens to come included. Prices and details for third-party services are current as of October 5, 2026, and TNT notes its schedule is subject to change, so confirm specifics at sign-up.

The ESPN side: 100 exclusive games across the ESPN App

ESPN's own announcement of August 26, 2026 lays out 100 exclusive games: 53 on ESPN and ABC, and 47 streamed on ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu. ESPN says all 100 matchups are available on the ESPN App with an ESPN Unlimited plan subscription or pay TV authentication.

There is a wrinkle worth reading carefully. ESPN's Select page says ESPN Select consists entirely of ESPN+ content and lists the NHL among it, while ESPN's release says the 100 exclusive games are on the ESPN App with ESPN Unlimited or pay TV authentication. ESPN's pages do not spell out how those two statements fit together, so confirm which plan covers which games when you sign up.

On pricing, ESPN's plans and prices support page as of October 5, 2026 lists ESPN Select at $13.99 monthly or $139.99 a year, and ESPN Unlimited at $31.99 monthly or $319.99 a year. ESPN Unlimited includes ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPN+, ESPN on ABC, SEC Network+, ACC Network Extra, NFL Network and CW Sports. One caveat from ESPN: when Unlimited is activated through a TV provider, content the provider does not carry may be missing.

NHL Power Play, explained

The feature that changes the math for a lot of fans is NHL Power Play on the ESPN App. It carries 1,050+ out-of-market games through the season, each with a choice of two live streams: home team or away team commentary. That is a meaningful amount of hockey beyond the national windows.

Power Play also keeps a replay library. Replays of every regular season and playoff game on ABC, ESPN, NHL Network and TNT are made available on NHL Power Play on the ESPN App, which is handy when a late start or a conflicting game gets in the way. NHL.com says Power Play is available to all ESPN direct-to-consumer subscribers.

One important boundary: Power Play covers out-of-market games. Your own local team is a separate question handled by that team's regional broadcaster, so plan for that broadcast arrangement on its own rather than assuming Power Play carries it.

The TNT side: 72 games and the biggest outdoor dates

TNT Sports' own announcement of August 26, 2026 confirms 72 regular season games on NHL on TNT, running from Wednesday September 30, 2026. Expect regular Tuesday and Wednesday night games, plus an extensive slate of Sunday games in the second half of the season. TNT's regular season coverage ends Thursday April 8, 2027.

TNT also holds the showcase events. The NHL Heritage Classic lands Sunday October 25, 2026 at 7 p.m. ET, Montreal Canadiens at Winnipeg Jets. The Thanksgiving Showdown doubleheader follows on Friday November 27, 2026: New York Rangers at Chicago Blackhawks at 5:30 p.m. ET, then Pittsburgh Penguins at Buffalo Sabres at 8 p.m. ET. The Winter Classic closes out the year Thursday December 31, 2026 at 6 p.m. ET, Colorado Avalanche at Utah Mammoth at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. All times Eastern, and TNT notes the schedule is subject to change.

When it counts most, TNT carries the championship. The 2027 Stanley Cup Final is exclusively on TNT Sports platforms.

HBO Max and live TV options for NHL on ESPN and TNT

HBO Max's help center says live sports are included with its Standard and Premium plans, and its NHL line names the regular season (select games), the Stanley Cup Playoffs (select games) and the 2027 Stanley Cup Final. Its sports page lists NHL on TNT and adds that live sports are on select plans, plan availability varies by subscription provider, select games are available and blackouts may apply. As of October 5, 2026, HBO Max's help center lists Basic With Ads at $10.99 monthly, Standard at $18.49 monthly and Premium at $22.99 monthly, before taxes.

A live TV service is the other route to NHL on ESPN and TNT in one place. YouTube TV's plan page, read October 5, 2026, shows the Base Plan at $82.99 monthly and lists ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, TNT and truTV; its page offered new users $59.99 monthly for the first 2 months, an offer it says ends 11/16/26. Other live TV services sell these networks too, but their lineup pages could not be read on October 5, 2026, so check a service's own lineup page for your ZIP code before committing.

The right pick usually comes down to how much of the season you want live versus on demand, and whether you already carry one of these subscriptions for other sports. Our Switch Score calculator can help you compare total cost for what you would actually pay.

Where ESPN Unlimited comes included

If you would rather not stack a separate ESPN subscription on top of everything else, note where ESPN Unlimited arrives bundled.

ESPN Unlimited comes included with Spectrum Stream TV Signature ($100/mo for 1 year; standard rates apply after), and with Spectrum Stream TV Pro and Spectrum Stream TV VIP. Spectrum Internet is required and sold separately; Internet 100 is $20/mo for 2 years with a Spectrum TV plan.

Signature also includes the Disney+ and Hulu bundle.

Spectrum's catalog says Spectrum Stream TV Pro adds Regional Sports Networks. Confirm what carries in your area before you decide.
